Breast Lift

Mastopexy, or a breast lift, raises and reshapes sagging breasts after weight loss by removing excess skin and repositioning the remaining tissue and nipples.

Procedure

A breast lift is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, either under general anesthesia or a local anesthetic with sedation. Mastopexy surgery can last from 1 to 3 hours, depending on the degree of reshaping and the techniques being used. Risks can include scars, skin loss, infection, unevenly positioned nipples, or permanent loss of feeling in nipples or breasts. Before opting to undergo a breast lift procedure, it's important to discuss both the risks and benefits with your plastic surgeon, and decide whether they are acceptable to meet your aesthetic goals. Plastic surgery should always be undertaken for yourself alone, and not to meet another person's ideals or expectations.

Breast lift patients generally recover for a week or more before returning to work, and for one month before undertaking any strenuous activities. The side effects during recovery can include temporary bruising, swelling, discomfort, numbness, or dry breast skin. Scars from a mastopexy can sometimes also be permanent, though they generally fade within several months to a year. The results of a breast lift can vary. Pregnancy, weight changes, or just time and aging may all cause new sagging. Results may also last longer or be enhanced when breast implants are inserted as part of the procedure.
